Scale model of a massive enclosed headstock roll turning lathe produced by Mesta Machine out of Pittsburgh Pennsylvania sometime prior to 1919..
Mesta roll turning lathes were used for manufacturing huge steel rolls for rolling mills. Variable speed electric motor coupled through a set of enclosed mechanical gears allowed for a variety of turning speeds. Based on photos from the era, machinists typically had to stand on pieces of scrap wood to be able to reach the operator's position.
