    Description

Carlin is a Swedish guitar pedal brand from the 70's. Carlin made three different pedals. Most famous are the phaser in a wah-enclosure and the compressor/fuzz. He also made a few of the one listed here: a ringmodulator. I (who run moody sounds) met Nils Olof Carlin and he encouraged me to reissue his pedals. This is an assembled and ready to use version of the Carlin Ringmodulator, worked out with mr Carlin, who designed it in the 70's.
We did an update of the pedal in Nov 16. Carlin first suggested two separate footswitches, two separate mix controls and two separate volume controls, buffered in- and outputs. We landed in a compromise, to fit in a regular BB enclosure. It has one 4pdt footswich, two separate mixcontrols, one volume and buffered in and outs.
You can use the Ring modulator as a “regular” pedal, guitar in injack 1 and amp in outjack 1. You will find a sound that is both special and useful. It gives you a tone has some added harmonics and sounds a bit different from overdrives and fuzzes. I expect it can be used for rock and blues players who are looking for pedal that intensifies the sound in solos.
On top of this you can explore totally unique and odd sounds by connecting other sound sources to the pedal’s second input jack, while you are playing guitar in IN 1. This is because Carlin Ring Modulator is such that it produces a sound which is a combination of the input signals. As a sound source you could use an electric organ with one key constantly pressed for instance.
    Use Carlin Ringmodulator as an
    OCTAVE DOWN
    pedal
! You will get octave down effect if you connect In B and Out B with a patch cable! You can tweak the stability of the octave effect by dialling the Mix knobs.
If you don't connect anything to IN 2 the signal in IN 1 goes through IN 2 too and the signal interacts with itself (this is because the 2nd jack has "breaking contact").

The pedal is powered with a regular 9V adapter (not included). Use the polarity "center negative" (the most common one).
If you use it with IN1 only the switch switches between ring effect in out A and out B, and true bypass in out A (out B is silent i bp).If you use it with IN2 only the switch switches between ring effect in out A and out B, and not true bypass in out A and out B. Out A and B are unbuffered in bypass with this setup.
Carlin was originally looking for a pedal that could be used by two persons at the same time, for example one bass player and one guitarist. Here we ran into a problem when we did the clone: you can use it with two players, and achieve the same effect, but IN 2 will be silent in bypass. But a single user who are looking for experimental sounds (by using a “jamming” signal on IN 2) has maybe an advantage that IN 2 goes silent in bypass?
The circuit is all analog and based around nine pnp transistors. Parts of high quality are used (Switchcraft jacks, Lumberg current jack, powder coated enclosure, green 4pdt switch)
