    Description

    2 Similar hard-to-find antique Czech cups, each  showing a scene from Smetana's comic opera
    THE BARTERED BRIDE. (see below).
    Late 19th, early 20th c.
    Excellent gift for the opera lover.
    -Slightly taller one, quite shiny luster/lustre ware with excellent gilt, shows the two lovers  embracing.  Legend in Czech says something like
    Bartered [sold] bride, faithful to our loved ones!
    This one is
    marked clearly
    Czecho Slovakia
    .  Height 3.75 inches, capacity 10 oz.  Beautiful condition.
    --Second cup shows village scene with the couple and the bride's formerly-disapproving father.
    The legend  translates to the father's speech:
    So be it then, so be it. I'll give you my blessing
    .
    Capacity  9-10 ounces.   Height  3.5 inches.  This one shows some gilt loss and is not marked on reverse.
    Image is very nicely rendered however, and shows gilt dots.

    NOTE: The work was first performed in Prague in 1866, but premiered in its present form in 1870.  At this time, the Czech lands were part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.  Czechoslovakia did not exist until 1919.
